Testimonial from a happy chairmaker
"In 2008 several Meeniyan folk enticed Howard Archbold to come and teach a course in Windsor chair making as it was done traditionally in the past. Meeniyan is in the heart of South Gippsland - beautiful country which has attracted a significant art community. There are several excellent galleries showing high quality work, lots of excellent eateries, fine wineries and superb accommodation http://www.promaccom.com.au/accommodation.htm
Apart from the environment, this course is a wonderful experience - no power tools, just the sound of tools as they were designed by the original Windsor chair-makers, chipping and scraping away on newly hewn tree stumps and the rhythmic movement of the pole lathes. It is easy to forget that we can create with our hands, our eyes and our minds. It is, in fact, a truly empowering experience. And, of course, the participants all communicate, help one another, laugh
a lot and exercise muscles almost as forgotten as the craft of chair making itself.
We all made something different - a milking stool, a double bow Windsor chair, a Welsh stick chair. All
were amazed at what we had achieved, and delighted with what we had learned under the expert tutelage
of Howard, who never lets an opportunity for fun pass him by.
This is something unforgettable, inspiring and enormously enjoyable."
